Visiting Vancouver for FIFA? There's a Private Forest Spa 20 Minutes Away
Vancouver hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026 in June through to July will be loud, full, and relentlessly on. The matches, the fan zones, the restaurant and bar patios, the crowds moving through the city in waves, and while a love for a sport is an extraordinary thing, it can also be a lot. Some of our bodies may start to ask for something more calm and secluded.
If you have spent time in a hammam in Marrakech, a bathhouse in Istanbul, a therme in Baden-Baden, or a temazcal in Mexico City, you already know what that calm thing is. You may know contrast therapy as something mundane, built into how cities function, how bodies are maintained, how people recover and rest. If youβre visiting Vancouver, and want a reprieve from the noise and stimulation, you just might want to know where to find a sauna.
Bowen Island is a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. Once the ferry docks at Snug Cove, the currents of water, sea breeze,, birds, and forest take over. Mist Thermal Sanctuary is a private wood-fire sauna and cold plunge Bowen Island forest spa, next door to Nectar Yoga Retreat, and the best part is itβs close enough from the city to reach even outside of the weekend.
What Mist Thermal Is
Mist Thermal Sanctuary is a private thermal spa on Bowen Island, BC. We are a thermal circuit in the original sense, of heat and cold and rest, in a forest rather than a tiled room, on an island rather than a city block.
Each booking is its own self-contained circuit with a beautiful, private dressing hut, an outdoor shower with eucalyptus mist, a wood-fire sauna with the option to scent with natural botanicals, a cold plunge and transition tub drawing from a spring aquifer beneath the property, and a fire lounge looking out into the old trees. Everything is ready when you arrive, from the sauna at temperature, the herbal tea bar fully stocked, towels, waffle robe, slippers and plant-based body care laid out. And the sound and green of the forest to soothe you to your core.
Three private units sit tucked within the temperate rainforest. Sessions run 90 or 120 minutes.
For Those Who Have Been Standing On Their Tired Feet
Contrast therapy works on the body through a well-documented mechanism of alternating vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Heat induces vasodilation, improving blood flow and promoting tissue healing, while cold causes vasoconstriction, reducing inflammation and swelling; alternating between the two enhances circulation and accelerates recovery. What the research is slower to account for is what happens when that process takes place in a forest.
Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing, has a substantial body of evidence behind it now, with measurable reductions in cortisol, heart rate, and blood pressure from time spent among trees, independent of exercise or any other intervention. The mechanism is partly olfactory: phytoncides, the beneficial compounds released by conifers, have been shown to lower stress hormones and increase natural killer cell activity. It is also partly acoustic: the presence of organic sounds with the absence of city noise allows the nervous system to drop its ambient vigilance, supporting parasympathetic activation in a way that engineered silence in an urban spa cannot fully replicate.
At Mist, the forest environment is as much part of the heat, cold, and rest cycles as the sauna and cold plunge themselves.

I've visited a few thermal spas over the years β Sparkling Hill, Scandinave, and Kananaskis Nordic Spa β and while all were beautiful in their own way, Mist felt like something entirely different. More intimate. More peaceful. More me."β Cassie Markham, Peak Planning

Planning Your Bowen Island Day Trip from Vancouver
Horseshoe Bay is roughly 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver by car via Highway 1 West (allow extra time if you're travelling during peak hours, as the Lions Gate Bridge and Highway 1 can extend that time estimation during rush hour). From Horseshoe Bay, you have two options: drive your car onto the ferry, or park in the designated garage and walk on. Both work, though having a car on the island makes getting to Mist Thermal considerably easier.
The Queen of Capilano ferry runs from Horseshoe Bay between 5:50am and 10:00pm, with the crossing taking 20 minutes. Your BC Ferries ticket covers the return trip. When you're ready to head back, join the ferry lineup and board when the light signals green. Ferry times can shift, so it's worth checking the ferry schedule and ferry conditions before you leave; sailing times, vehicle space, and any delays are all listed at bcferries.com. And for reassurance, if you miss the last ferry off the island, Cormorant Marine Water Taxis run a late-night service back to Horseshoe Bay for foot passengers.
The crossing itself is part of the transition from city-mind to island-mind. The water, the mountains, the air changing as the city recedes, and by the time Snug Cove comes into view, the nervous systemβs decompression has already started.
From the ferry terminal, take Bowen Island Truck Road, which becomes Grafton Road, and drive approximately seven minutes. Turn right onto Gardner Lane and follow the signage to Mist. Parking on site is limited, so if you're coming as a small group, carpooling is encouraged.
Mist is one anchor of a broader bowen island wellness experience. Nectar Yoga Retreat, Mist's sister property on the same grounds, offers overnight accommodation, yoga, and retreat programming for those who want to extend the stay. As Nectar tends to fill, itβs encouraged to book ahead.
Make a Full Day of It on Bowen Island
A 90 minute session covers two or three full thermal rounds, with the 120 minute session an extra circuit, but Bowen Island rewards a slower pace if you have the time. The village at Snug Cove has places to eat, a local cidery, and trails that wind through the forest. For a full list of what to do before or after your session, Mist has put together a guide for Bowen Island attractions and some of the best things to do on Bowen Island. And after a day of relaxation and enjoying the charm of Bowen Island, you can be back in the city by the evening.
Book Early
The city will still be there when you get back. Mist has three private units and FIFA season fills quickly. Book a Mist Experience or learn more.
